What to Know About Your Invisalign Treatment

Posted on 09/17/2021

Lots of people get orthodontic treatment to get straighter teeth and a better-looking smile. However, many don't want to go through with having metal braces for months on end. It can stifle people's confidence and can be damaging socially and psychologically. Not to mention the irritation, limitations, and maintenance it takes to deal with braces. Thankfully, there is an alternative called Invisalign. At Choonara Orthodontics, we provide Invisalign treatment to those who qualify, and who are looking for an alternative to braces. However, there are important factors to consider before starting Invisalign.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern solution to straightening teeth without the traditional use of wires and brackets. It is a clear, smooth, plastic aligner molded to snap over your teeth. Every two weeks you will put on a new pair of aligners. The pressure will shift your teeth gradually as you change trays each time.

How to Get Started

The first step is to set up a consultation with an orthodontist. They will be able to guide you and answer any questions you have about Invisalign. They also will go over the costs of Invisalign treatment and compare other treatment options you are interested in. After you have chosen to move forward, your orthodontist will take records, such as x-rays and 3D scans. Then they will order Invisalign trays for you and in 4-6 weeks you will get your kit.

How Do I Use Invisalign?

You will have to wear your Invisalign trays as much as possible, for about 22 hours. The nice thing with Invisalign is that, unlike regular braces, you will be able to take them off when you eat, drink, and brush/floss. Because you are removing your braces, you can continue to eat what you want, with consideration. It's important to brush after each meal or each drink (that's not water). It's also important to have discipline- if you don't wear them enough, your treatment will not progress. Also, make sure to not lose your aligners by keeping them in a case.

How Do I Qualify?

Everyone has different problems when they go in to see an orthodontist. Numerous factors come into play when determining if a patient qualifies for Invisalign. It all depends on how crooked your teeth are and what kind of bite you have. And depending on the severity of the case, Invisalign might not be as effective. It also depends on how much you're willing to spend. Invisalign can be more expensive than traditional braces and whether you have insurance that could cover the expense.
