While we enjoy do-it-yourself or DIY tutorials that can make easy work of various household tasks and hobbies, we are very alarmed over an online trend that is making headlines around the world. In several online videos, young people are showing others how to perform what is being referred to as "DIY braces" or "DIY orthodontics." In these demonstrations, people are showing viewers how to bind their teeth with various materials like rubber bands, elastic hair ties and dental floss to prompt the teeth to move into proper alignment.
Dr. Choonara and the team at Choonara Orthodontics wants to warn former, current and potential patients about the dangers of DIY braces, as they can result in devastating consequences like severe infections of the gums and underlying bone. This practice can even loosen the teeth to the point where they fall out or come out very easily. Anyone trying to save money on orthodontic care by attempting to move their own teeth could end up in an emergency room with tooth & bone damage that may require extensive and very expensive dental treatment to remedy. This could end up costing more than seeking professional orthodontic care.
The only people who can safely and effectively move teeth are orthodontists like Dr. Choonara who have the education and experience to provide orthodontic care. We would like to encourage all you parents out there to talk to your kids about how dangerous DIY braces is. Let your children know that this is a very dangerous thing to do, and can result in extensive and costly medical and dental care.
