At Choonara Orthodontics, we use a variety of methods to correct our patient’s bites and teeth. Often times we’re asked: Are braces or Invisalign the better treatment option? The answer isn’t as simple as it seems, as they each offer their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Everyone’s case is different, and it’s important to work with your orthodontist to create the most effective plan for you. Below, we outline some of the differences between our two most popular treatments.

Advantages of Braces

Braces are affixed to your teeth using an adhesive, and are made out of either a metal or ceramic material. A thin metal wire is then placed across the teeth and attached to the braces in order to slowly straighten a patient's teeth.

The greatest advantage of braces is that they effectively correct the most complex dental problems. Early orthodontic intervention, in children ages 11-15, can help guide the growth of the jaws and adult teeth, preventing the development of more serious oral issues. Of course, braces also help close undesirable gaps and correct crooked teeth, setting the stage for a beautiful smile at the conclusion of treatment. Unlike Invisalign, which could be removed at the patient’s leisure, braces are constantly at work, making them one of the most efficient forms of treatment.

Disadvantages of Braces

Only two disadvantages stem from wearing braces: dietary restrictions and proactive care. Patients wearing braces have to stay away from many of their favorite sticky and chewy sweets to avoid breaking brackets and wires during treatment. Occasionally, discoloration can occur after your braces are removed, due to the lack of proper home care during treatment. However, with a couple lifestyle changes and proactive oral care, wearing braces is a simple way to get a beautiful smile.

Advantages of Invisalign

The Invisalign System is a set of clear aligners that the patient wears most of the day (22 hours is recommended) to slowly shift your teeth into the desired position. They are made from a BPA free plastic and are created to comfortably fit your mouth throughout the duration of treatment.

Invisalign allows our teenage and adult patients to correct their smile without anyone knowing they’re undergoing treatment. The aligners also tend to work more quickly than braces, requiring only 6-18 months of time where braces take about 2 years. Perhaps their biggest appeal is that they’re removable for eating, drinking, and special occasions.

Disadvantages of Invisalign

While is seems like Invisalign is the clear winner when it comes to straightening your teeth, there are some disadvantages to using Invisalign. The main one being that it may not be suitable for all cases. Because they are removable, it also makes it easier to forget to put them in after a meal or leave them out if you are feeling any discomfort. While you are able to eat anything you want while using Invisalign, excellent oral hygiene is still important. Also, If money is a concern, Invisalign is more expensive than traditional braces.
